A club that is looking to bounce back after a rather disappointing season is Atlanta. In 2022, they missed the playoffs for the second time in three seasons and made some changes to ensure the team is more competitive. So far, they have shown that this is the case. Atlanta opened the season with a win against the San Jose Earthquake, before drawing with Toronto FC. Then, the club went on the road to hammer Charlotte FC, 3-0, and how have the most points in the Eastern Conference. Granted, we are in the infant stages of the 2023 campaign.
Another team hoping to get back in the postseason after missing out last year are the Portland Timbers. One of the league’s most profitable franchises missed the playoffs for the first time in five years, less than a year removed from a berth in the MLS Cup Final. It has not been all that great of a start in Portland. While they kicked things off with a win over Sporting Kansas City, the Timbers have since lost to the defending champions, Los Angeles FC, and the upstart St. Louis City squad, at home, last Saturday.
Saturday will mark the sixth meeting between the two clubs, with Atlanta holding a 2-1-1 edge over the Timbers, most famously coming out on top in the 2018 championship game.
