IndyStar is utilizing an AI tool to boost our high school sports coverage by creating and sharing game summaries across Indiana. The goal is to give more athletes and families access to what’s happening with their local teams. The AI uses data gathered through ScoreStream, a free mobile app that allows parents and sports fans to record scores from high school football, basketball, baseball, softball, and volleyball games. The AI is named Lede AI, which collects the final result and generates a brief summary. These summaries are then posted on the High School Sports Scores page on IndyStar.com.
Since there are hundreds of high school games played in Indiana each week, more than we can feature on our sports page, these automated game reports are designed to be found through search engines. Parents and fans can help get their team featured in IndyStar by using the ScoreStream app, which can be downloaded for free on iPhone, iPad, and Android to score the games they attend. Thanks to the speed of the AI, game reports are ready in minutes, meaning fans attending the game can find a summary of that game on IndyStar.com by the time they get home.
This addition of AI-produced summaries will not affect the in-depth coverage IndyStar already provides for high school sports. We are hoping to provide even more information for parents and sports fans about their teams even when our human journalists aren’t at the game.
