You don’t see this every day. Pet fish in Japan logged on to the Nintendo Switch store, changed their owner’s avatar, set up a Pay Pal account, and even put a charge on a credit card bill. All of this was live-streamed on the internet.
The fish belong to YouTuber Mutekimaru, whose channel is popular with gamers for its videos featuring tetra fish “playing” video games.
Mutekimaru had installed motion detection tracking software in the fish tanks, allowing the fish to control a Nintendo Switch console. But the technology and the fish’s unexpected mastery of it led to an event while Mutekimaru was live streaming Pokémon.
The YouTuber had stepped away for a break when the game crashed due to a system error, and the console returned to the home screen. But the fish kept swimming and kept controlling the console remotely.
During the next seven hours, the fish changed the name of the owner’s Switch account, logged into the Nintendo store twice, checked legal terms and conditions, downloaded a new avatar, and set up a PayPal account. They even sent an email to their owner.
But things didn’t end there. The fish added 500 yen ($4) to Mutekimaru’s Switch account from his credit card during the live stream, exposing his credit card details.
Thousands of viewers watched the unintended takeover being live-streamed, and the incident went viral on Twitter, with thousands of Japanese users sharing their amusement.
