Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer and Stranger Things’ David Harbour will bring a sprinkling of star power to THQ Nordic’s Alone in the Dark reboot when it releases ahead of Halloween on 25th October, 2023. Confirmed as part of a showcase earlier today, Comer will play Emily Hartwood while Harbour will assume the role of the series’ trademark detective Edward Carnaby.
Loosely inspired by the 1992 original, you’ll be able to get your very first taste of the title as part of a demo available to download from the PS Store right now. This prologue starring supporting character Grace Saunders has been inspired by Alone in the Dark 2’s infamous Jack in the Dark demo, and while the gameplay in the taster will differ from the main course, it will give you an opportunity to explore the chilling backdrop of the Derceto Mansion.
Admittedly the action does, in some senses, look a little like a low-budget Resident Evil, but there’s clear promise here: the showcase didn’t centre too much on combat, but from previous showings it looks like a frantic over-the-shoulder shooter, and developer Pieces Interactive is promising a good variety of puzzle solving, too. Of note, you’ll be able to toggle the difficulty to your tastes depending on how much or little guidance you’d like.
All in all, we’re pretty pumped for the final product. Despite the original being a hugely influential release, Alone in the Dark’s hasn’t really received the respect it deserves in recent years. This looks to be putting the franchise right back on track, with a hugely compelling reboot that looks to refresh the 1992 classic in all the right ways.
