AltspaceVR, a social virtual worlds platform acquired by Microsoft in 2017, will be shutting down on March 10. The AltspaceVR team announced in a blog post on Friday that they are transitioning to Microsoft Mesh, Microsoft’s cloud-based AR/VR platform.
“We are now aiming for a more open, accessible, and secure version of immersive experiences in the metaverse,” reads the blog post. “Using Mesh, we aspire to create a platform that offers the most diverse opportunities to all involved, including creators, partners, and customers.”
The news comes after Microsoft declared on Wednesday that they are cutting 10,000 jobs across their global workforce to refocus on areas of growth, such as artificial intelligence.
AltspaceVR encouraged creators and developers on their platform to host final events in the coming weeks. They also provided directions for people to download their AltspaceVR data and content.
Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for additional comment.
