CEO Carl Pei stirred up quite a storm with his take on software updates, resulting in the Nothing Phone (1) being stuck on Android 12 for a better part of 2022. A beta program was announced later in the year, with a stable update scheduled for “early 2023”. It is now rolling out in India, Italy, Sweden, and other regions with a major caveat.
Users on Reddit and Twitter have reported receiving the stable Nothing OS 1.5 update on their Nothing Phone (1). However, only participants of the open beta are eligible, as the build is just 157 MB and is bundled with the older January 2023 Android security patch. The full update will be remarkably larger and hopefully come with updated security. Nonetheless, it is good news as it ensures the software is ready and should be deployed within the coming days.
Some of the changes forth by the Android 13-based Nothing OS 1.5 update includes new customization options for the phone’s Glyph, an integrated QR code scanner in the camera app, a redesigned media control panel, faster fingerprint unlock and app load times, more lock screen customization options and more. The build for regular Nothing Phone (1) users could include some additional changes, and we’ll update the post once it goes live.
